Alabama High School Football Head Coaches

Aubrey Hicks

Aubrey "Snake Eyes" Hicks was born January 5, 1925 in Tallevast, Florida. He would attend and graduate from Central high school in Phenix City. Following graduation Hicks served his country in the Navy during World War II. That is when he got his nickname "Snake Eyes", from rolling snake eyes which was the favorite pastime of soldiers during the war.

He played along the offensive and defensive lines for Troy State in 1948 before moving on to his coaching career. Hicks became the head coach at Addison in 1951 where he would remain for the next twenty years as the head coach. During his career at Addison his overall record was 143-50-7.

In 1970 the Bulldogs would win the schools first ever state championship by defeating Susan Moore 15-7 in the title game. That 1970 squad would win a school record thirteen games and finish the season 13-0. They outscored their opponents by an amazing total of 444-23 with nine shutouts.

His 1971 team went undefeated in the regular season only to lose in the championship game to Marion County 17-14.

Hicks received numerous honors during his career, including being named Coach of the Year several times. He was on the AHSAA Central Board of Control and was the President of the AHSAA Coaches Association. The stadium at Addison was named in his honor.

Coach Aubrey Gene "Snake Eyes" Hicks, age 83, died November 1, 2008 in Phenix City, Alabama. Services were held at the First Baptist Church in Addison.
